The ideal window for a classic, posed newborn photoshoot is within the first 5 to 14 days of your baby’s life. During this period, newborns are typically sleepiest, most flexible, and still love to curl up in those womb-like poses. To ensure we can schedule your session within this precious timeframe, we recommend booking with us during your second or third trimester. We will use your due date as a tentative booking and then finalize the exact session date once your baby arrives.
While the 5-14 day window is ideal for those sleepy, curled-up poses, beautiful baby photography is absolutely possible at any age. If your baby is a bit older (3-8 weeks), we will simply adapt the session style. We will focus on capturing more interactive moments—their beautiful open eyes, first smiles, and growing connection with you. These “older newborn” sessions are wonderful for capturing the beginnings of your baby’s unique personality.
Please do not worry about this for a single moment. This is the most common concern parents have, and our answer is simple: your baby runs the show. Our sessions are intentionally long and entirely baby-led, with ample, unhurried time for feeding, changing, cuddling, and soothing. Our photographers are experienced “baby whisperers” and have a multitude of techniques to calm and comfort little ones. A fussy period is a normal part of the process, not a problem.
Your baby’s safety is our absolute, non-negotiable priority. Our photographers are professionally trained in safe newborn posing techniques. We will never place a baby in a prop or a pose that is unstable or uncomfortable. Some complex images (like the “froggy” pose) are created as “composite images”—meaning they are a blend of multiple photos where the baby is supported by hands at all times, which are then professionally edited out.
This comes down to the style you love most. Our Studio Session is ideal for creating classic, fine-art portraits with professional lighting and access to our full range of props for those perfectly posed shots. Our In-Home Lifestyle Session is more candid and documentary-style, capturing authentic moments and connections in the comfort and personal setting of your own home, using beautiful natural light.
Depending on the package you choose and your baby’s temperament, a newborn session can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. This relaxed pacing ensures we are never rushed and have plenty of time to accommodate your baby’s needs for feeding and comforting, which is the key to achieving those peaceful, sleeping portraits.
Upon booking, you will receive a detailed Prep Guide with all our best tips for a smooth and successful session. Generally, we recommend trying to keep your baby awake for a little while before you arrive and giving them a full feeding right before the session begins. This helps ensure they are sleepy and content. For parents, we suggest wearing simple, solid, neutral-coloured clothing for any family portraits. Most importantly, just relax and trust us to handle the rest.
